We have a Synergy HT and wish to know if turning the unit off at night will affect lamp life or not. We'd like to decrease overall utility bills by all means possible.

If you turn off the unit at night, the life of the tungsten halogen lamp will extend because the lamp will not be powered. If you have Gen5 software, you can also turn off the lamp while leaving the unit powered on. This would also extend the lamp life. When the Synergy HT is powered on again, the tungsten lamp will not come on until you request a fluorescence read. When the read is requested, the tungsten lamp requires a 3 minute warmup. If you are using Gen5 software, the tungsten lamp can be powered ahead of time so that it is ready for reading a plate without waiting for warmup. After the lamp has been powered, it will stay on until it is turned off or the reader itself is powered off.  Note that the xenon flash lamp used for absorbance and time resolved fluorescence flashes only as needed and requires neither warm up nor power off and its life depends strictly on how many plates are read and the flashes used to read each well.
